我们生在这个末法时代,离佛远了,可是法还没有灭尽,大家还可以依照佛法来修行,还有希望开悟证果成佛。身为出家人必须要抱定一贯的宗旨,即使横逆交加,仍然百折不挠。不管谁来破坏我们的宗旨,都不被摇动,只要认识清楚自己的所行所作是一条光明正大之路,就勇猛迈步前进。
We live in the Dharma-ending Age, which is distant from the Buddha's time. Yet we still have a chance to become enlightened and realize Buddhahood, because the Buddha's teachings have not disappeared yet. As left-home people, we must adhere firmly to our principles no matter how tough it is. Nothing should deter us, and no one should be able to make us renounce our principles. Once we recognize the bright and true path, we should go forward with vigor!
在末法时代,一切天魔外道、魑魅魍魉、山妖水怪,所最怕的就是〈楞严咒〉。〈楞严咒〉是破邪显正的神咒,而《楞严经》就是为〈楞严咒〉所说的一部经,是佛教的骨髓。人若无骨髓,一定会死;佛教里若没有《楞严经》,也可以说就没有佛法了。所以在这个末法时代,护持正法的最好方法,就是把《楞严经》能背诵出,〈楞严咒〉更要能背得出,我们要能背诵、能读念,念得滚瓜烂熟,尽量发挥《楞严经》的妙旨,一一为人演说。
In the Dharma-ending Age, the heavenly demons, unbelievers, ghosts, spirits, and goblins fear nothing more than the Shurangama Mantra. This spiritual mantra destroys wrong and reveals the right. The Shurangama Sutra, which was spoken for the sake of this Mantra, is the very marrow of the Buddhadharma. A person without marrow would surely die; without the Shurangama Sutra, the Buddhadharma could not exist. Therefore, now in the Dharma-ending Age, the best way to protect and uphold the True Dharma is to memorize the Shurangama Sutra. It's even more important to commit the Shurangama Mantra to memory. We should be able to recite the Mantra by heart so that it just rolls off our tongue with perfect ease. We should also do our very best to apply the wonderful principles in the Shurangama Sutra and expound them for other people.
世界上如果没有〈楞严咒〉,妖魔鬼怪就会肆无忌惮、横行于世。世界上若有〈楞严咒〉,旁门左道、魑魅魍魉、山妖水怪就都还有所恐惧,不敢公然出现于世。若世界没有〈楞严咒〉,这就是一个妖魔鬼怪的世界了。你看现在人的思想行为都是古里古怪,不如禽兽,这是因为妖魔鬼怪炽盛于世,蛊惑世人,令人失去根本的智慧,变成麻木不仁,所以所行所作,连牛马都不如了。这也因为懂得诵《楞严经》,持〈楞严咒〉的人,愈来愈少,所以天魔外道才猖獗无忌。
If the Shurangama Mantra did not exist, the demons, externalists, ghosts, and goblins would wreak havoc in the world. Since it still exists, these beings dare not show themselves in the world. Without the Shurangama Mantra, the world would be filled with demons, ghosts, and goblins. Since these beings are already starting to run rampant and delude people, people think and act strangely and do not even measure up to animals sometimes. Having lost their inherent wisdom, they act worse than cows and horses. As the number of people who can recite the Shurangama Sutra and the Shurangama Mantra dwindles, the heavenly demons and unbelievers become wild and reckless.
但是万佛圣城是佛法的发源地,搜集世界上真修道人精华之所在,所以万佛圣城非妖魔鬼怪的地盘,他们住不下的。有些人在万佛圣城住不下,都是因为德行不够,思想有邪知邪见,所以久了就原形毕露,待不住了。
However, the Buddha's teachings are disseminated into the world from the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, and the most outstanding cultivators in the world are found here. And so demons, ghosts, and goblins cannot dwell here; this is not their territory. People who lack virtue and right views cannot stay long at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. When their true character and their wrong views are exposed, they can only leave the City.
以后在万佛圣城的出家、在家四众,都要把《楞严经》熟读能背得出,这样对佛法有莫大的帮助。因为有些著名的教授、学者,甚至有些出家人,居然公开说《楞严经》是假的。为什么他们这么颠倒?因为《楞严经》有〈四种清净明诲〉与〈五十阴魔〉,他们受不了这些照妖镜。与〈五十阴魔〉一比,这些妖魔都现形了;与〈四种清净明诲〉一比,他们更是无法守这些规矩。因为受不了,所以他们就昧着良心,打大妄语。
From now on, the members of the fourfold assembly of left-home and lay people at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas are required to study the Shurangama Sutra until they know it by heart. Then they will be of great help to Buddhism. Some well-known professors, scholars, and even left-home people blatantly claim that the Shurangama Sutra is false. Why are they so deluded? Because they can't stand to see themselves reflected in the “demon-spotting mirrors” of the Four Clear Instructions on Purity and the Fifty Skandha-demon States discussed in that Sutra. The Fifty Skandha-demon States exposes their demonic state. And they cannot abide by the rules specified in the Four Clear Instructions on Purity. For these reasons, they go against their conscience and utter this great lie, saying that the Sutra is false.
我们对《楞严经》与〈楞严咒〉要认识得非常清楚,没有任何咒比〈楞严咒〉更灵,没有其它经文比《楞严经》更真,能把天魔外道及一切众生的毛病,针针见血,阐明得如此详细。
We should clearly understand the Shurangama Sutra and the Shurangama Mantra. No mantra is more efficacious than the Shurangama Mantra, and no Sutra is more true than the Shurangama Sutra. No other Sutra pinpoints and describes the problems of the celestial demons, externalists, and living beings in such precise detail.
若没有〈楞严咒〉,佛法就没有了;没有《楞严经》,正法就消灭了。各位为了护持佛法,一定要把《楞严经》读得熟之又熟,随时随地都可背可讲,才不愧为真正的佛弟子,才不枉出家一场。
If the Shurangama Mantra disappeared, the Buddhadharma would also disappear; if the Shurangama Sutra vanished, the True Dharma would perish as well. In order to protect and uphold the Buddhadharma, all of you must study the Shurangama Sutra until you can recite it by heart and lecture on it at any time or place. Then you will be true disciples of the Buddha, and you will not have left home in vain.
因此,大家切勿被这些“名学者”、“名教授”、“大法师”所眩惑,以盲引盲,以为《楞严经》是假的。他们凭什么说《楞严经》是假的?根本他们是睁着眼睛说瞎话,贡高邪见,我慢猖狂,等到将来受果报时,是不堪设想的。
Beware of those famous scholars, renowned professors, and great Dharma Masters who are blind men leading the blind when they tell others that the Shurangama Sutra is false. On what evidence do they base their claim? They are shameless liars, arrogant and disrespectful, confused by wrong views. In the future, their retribution will be terrible beyond scope.
还有以下的消息向诸位发表。不管其它道场的家风如何,在万佛圣城若想出家者,最低限度要有大学文凭。若从旁的大学已得到毕业文凭,还需要在本校接受僧伽训练班三年的严格训练,品学兼优,始有资格受具足戒,为比丘、比丘尼。
I have one more thing to tell everyone. I don't know the policy in other monasteries, but the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas accepts only college graduates for admission into the Sangha. If you have a college degree, you must further undergo three years of rigorous training in the Sangha and Laity Training Programs, and you must show excellent character and scholarship, before you can qualify for ordination as a Bhikshu or Bhikshuni.
在这个时代,出家人必定要有出类拔萃、特别优良的教育背景,方成法器。若只字不识,终天只会拉拢攀缘,在佛教里混饭吃,做些不高尚、不清净的犯戒行为,有辱缁门,怎么可以为佛教增光?怎么令人对三宝生敬仰心?因此为提高缁门素质,从今以后,欲来万佛圣城出家者,不论男女老幼,先要考取大学文凭,并能背出《楞严经》、〈楞严咒〉,方被录取。此外出家众本来应熟读的沙弥戒、〈五十三小咒〉、《梵网经菩萨戒》、《四分律》比丘、比丘尼戒,也要能背得出来。
In the present age, Sangha members should be especially well-educated so that they can transmit the Dharma. There are illiterate and opportunistic monks and nuns who get their meals from Buddhism, but then disgrace the Sangha by breaking the precepts; how can they bring glory to Buddhism and inspire people to have faith in the Triple Jewel? Therefore, in order to improve the qualifications of the Sangha, from this day forward, those who wish to leave the home-life at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, whether they are male or female, young or old, must first earn a college degree and be able to recite the Shurangama Sutra and the Shurangama Mantra by heart, before they will be accepted. In addition, left-home people are expected to seriously study and commit to memory: the Shramanera (novice) precepts, the Fifty-three Small Mantras, the Brahma Net Sutra Bodhisattva Precepts, and the Four Division Vinaya (the Bhikshu and Bhikshuni precepts).
从前,在此道场出家的要求,虽然没有现在这么严格,但我一向不随便收徒弟,要收也是极为谨慎,经长期审察来者的思想言行,才接受他剃度。但有鉴于末法盖世,邪魔炽然,不得不做此破釜沈舟的改革运动,积极提高出家人的品学水平。凡是跟我出家的弟子,都要顶天立地,允文允武,为法门大将,甚至于以世俗的角度观之,亦是超卓非凡的人材。已跟我出家的弟子们,也应该个个会背《楞严经》,随时随地能讲能说。这样才算得上实在进行弘扬正法的责任,续佛命脉,没有白出家一趟!
In the past, although the requirements for leaving the home-life at this Way-place were not quite as strict, I have never accepted disciples casually. I am always very cautious, and only after long-term observation of the disciples' thinking, speech, and conduct do I permit them to shave their heads. But now, when the Dharma-ending Age prevails in the world and demons are on the loose, I have no choice but to start this revolution to raise the ethical and educational standards of the Sangha. Every left-home disciple of mine must be an indomitable hero skilled in both martial and literary arts, a great general of the Dharma. His talents should be superlative, even from a worldly perspective. My left-home disciples should also memorize the Shurangama Sutra and be able to lecture on it whenever the occasion calls for it. If you can do that, you are genuinely propagating the True Dharma and are extending the lifespan of Buddhism, and you have not left the home-life in vain.

真实不虚的四种清净明诲
The Four Clear Instructions on Purity Are Absolutely True
《楞严经》所说的道理,都是正合乎人的毛病──无明罪业,也正是痛下针砭,对症下药。
The principles in the Shurangama Sutra deal directly with our problems─our ignorance and our karmic offenses. They pinpoint our faults and urge us to change; they are exactly the right medicine for our illnesses.
《楞严经》里的〈四种清净明诲〉:断淫、断杀、断偷、断妄,是息息相关的。若犯淫戒,就容易犯杀戒,也容易犯盗戒、妄语戒。因此犯淫戒,是杀盗妄都包括了。所以分而言之是四种,合而言之是一体的。
The Four Clear Instructions on Purity in the Shurangama Sutra, which say that one must put an end to one's lust, killing, stealing, and lying, are closely interrelated. If you break the precept against lust, it is easy to break the precepts against killing, stealing, and lying as well. Therefore, a transgression of the precept against lust includes transgressions of the other three precepts. Discussed separately, they are four kinds, but spoken of together, they are a single entity.
佛这么悲心切切,苦口婆心,详详细细地为我们说这〈四种清净明诲〉,可是一般人还不相信。不是一般人不相信,而是其中有些学者、教授,或不能守戒的出家人,他们不相信。这些人无法改善过来,不能将根刨出,藕断丝连,纠缠不清,所以他索性就什么都不信,而公然说《楞严经》是假的。
The Buddha, out of great compassion, earnestly explained the Four Clear Instructions on Purity in detail, but most people do not believe in them. Actually, it's not the ordinary people, but certain scholars, professors, and left-home people who cannot hold the precepts, who do not believe in them. These people cannot reform and get rid of their offenses. They cannot completely break their bad habits, so they decide not to believe in anything and claim that the Shurangama Sutra is false.
《楞严经》在佛所说的经里,是最重要的一部经。不要说学者和教授说它是假的,或者不守戒律的人说它是假的,就算有一个人能现十八变及种种神通,以这种种神通力量来对我说《楞严经》是假的,我也不相信。为什么?因为《楞严经》所说的道理,都是正合乎人的毛病──无明罪业,也正是痛下针砭,对症下药。可是一般人都不愿意吃这副药,认为这个药太苦,受不了。所以就算有医生把药单开出来,他也把这个药丢弃不要,说这个药没有功效。这就叫自欺欺人,误人误己。
The Shurangama Sutra is one of the most important Sutras spoken by the Buddha. Not to mention scholars, professors, or people who break the precepts, even if someone who could perform the Eighteen Transformations of an Arhat and had all kinds of spiritual powers said the Shurangama Sutra was false, I wouldn't believe it. Why not? Because the principles in the Shurangama Sutra deal directly with our problems─our ignorance and our karmic offenses. They pinpoint our faults and urge us to change; they are exactly the right medicine for our illnesses. Most people cannot endure this bitter medicine. When the doctor prescribes it, they throw it away, saying it doesn't work. They just cheat and obstruct themselves and others.
因为如此,无知识的人就跟着这班人跑,说某某有名的学者、某某有名的教授、某某有名的大法师都说《楞严经》是假的。于是以盲引盲,互相酬唱,你也这么说,我也这么说,邪论纷然。如此一来,佛教徒也不需要守戒律了,也不需要听〈四种清净明诲〉了,〈五十阴魔〉也可以不理睬了,所有所有都可以一笔抹杀!各位想一想,这一类的人多坏!如果这种人不下拔舌地狱,那就没有公理可言了。
As a result of this, ignorant people then jump on the bandwagon, saying, “This famous scholar, that famous professor, and that renowned Dharma Master all say the Shurangama Sutra is false.” This is a case of the blind leading the blind. They all sing the same tune, disseminating their deviant theories that everything is permissible: They say that Buddhists need not hold the precepts, nor observe the Four Clear Instructions on Purity, nor pay attention to the Fifty Skandha-demon States. They reject all of that. Think how malicious these people are! If they don't fall into the Hell of Ripping Out Tongues, there is simply no justice at all.
所以我们早先讲的,这些心理变态的小孩子,就是造了毁谤大乘经典的无间罪业,所以才受这种骇人的果报。不过人都不知道,还是胆子那么大,冒冒失失公然敢去造罪业,瞪大眼睛说假话,这样子真是泯灭良知良能啊!把本有的聪明智慧都扼杀了,这真是可悲可叹的一件事!因为他们毁谤大乘经典,用眼耳鼻舌身意造种种恶业,所以等到来世再为人时,就变成这种心理变态的小孩子,也不自知,也不自觉,受恶果报还认为很好。
Earlier we were talking about autistic children. These children are undergoing the retribution for having slandered the Great Vehicle Sutras, an offense that merits falling into the Relentless Hells. Not realizing this, people recklessly commit offenses and tell blatant lies. They obliterate their conscience and capibilities, and kill their own intelligence and wisdom. How sad! In their past lives, autistic children slandered the Great Vehicle Sutras and committed all sorts of evil karma with their eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind; and so now that they have become humans again, they have been born with this handicap. Unaware of their own past deeds, they think their miserable retribution is quite fine.
不要用假聪明来破坏佛法。这些有名气的人,或者名学者、名教授、或大法师,他一说出这种毁坏佛法的话,无形中影响了千千万万、无量无边的人都失去真正的信心。你说这种罪业造得多大!百千劫之后,他转身为这类的儿童还算便宜呢!相信他永远都不会再讲话了,永远都要受哑吧的果报!因为他瞎人眼目,说的话误人太厉害了。
Don't use your false intelligence to disparage the Buddha's words. When a famous scholar, a well-known professor, or a great Dharma Master denigrates the Buddhadharma, he may influence countless numbers of people to lose faith. How great would you say his offense is? If his retribution is light, he may be reborn as a retarded child after hundreds of thousands of eons. But I believe he will undergo the retribution of being a mute forever! He has blinded and misled people too gravely with his words.
各位想想,为什么他要说这样的话?就因为他做不到〈四种清净明诲〉:不淫,他办不到;不杀,他也办不到;不偷,表面上他可以说不偷,但是某些学者教授常常去偷别人的文章,偷别人的学说凑起来,东拉西扯的。若拿别人的东西当为己有,这就是盗。若一天到晚欺骗学生,就等于在那里打妄语。当然,不是所有学者、教授都是这样,但其中就有这类德中之贼在作怪。
Why would he utter such slander? Because he cannot abide by the Four Clear Instructions on Purity. He cannot abstain from lust and killing; he may say he doesn't steal, but some scholars and professors habitually plagiarize the work of others. They steal others' theories, copying a little from this source and a little from that source and piecing it all together. Taking others' belongings is stealing. To deceive students all day long is plain lying. Of course not all scholars and professors are this way, but there are thieves among the virtuous who always act up.
因为〈四种清净明诲〉,他都办不到,所以他就慌了手脚了。他若接受这种理论,他自己就倒了,自己就失去地位了,但是他不甘示弱,所以昧着良心说:“《楞严经》是假的。”可是单说这句话,就犯了滔天大罪,所谓“豁达空,拨因果,莽莽荡荡招殃祸。”将来受无间地狱的果报时,就后悔莫及了。
Such people are flustered by the Four Clear Instructions on Purity, because they cannot live up to them. To accept those instructions as true would mean their downfall. They would lose their position. To conceal their weaknesses, they shamelessly claim that the Shurangama Sutra is false. But that claim is a tremendous offense. As it is said, When one passes into emptiness And denies cause and effect, Thus gross and reckless, One invites calamities. When they fall into the Relentless Hells to undergo their retributions, they will regret it, but it will be too late.

父母要负起教育的责任
Parents Should Take Responsibility for Teaching Their Children
家庭教育好,子女的前途就光明;家庭教育不好,子女的前途就黑暗。身为父母的,一言一行,一举一动,都要谨慎,不可随便。
If children are brought up well at home, they will have a promising future. If they aren't raised well, they will have a bleak future. Therefore, parents should act and speak with great care and not be too casual.
世界的好坏,关键在家庭。家庭教育好,子女的前途就光明;家庭教育不好,子女的前途就黑暗。虽然不能一概而论,大致上是差不多的。
The family is the key factor that determines whether the world is good or bad. If children are brought up well at home, they will have a promising future to look forward to. If they aren't raised well, they will have a bleak future ahead of them. This is true in most cases.
所以身为父母的,一言一行,一举一动,都要谨慎,不可随便。父母的行为不检,很容易影响子女变坏。没有家教的儿童,将来就会成为社会的败类,国家的包袱。父母要负起教育的责任,以身作则,做子女的好榜样,所行所做,光明磊落,舍己为人,有悲天悯人的思想。这样子女受到熏习,自然成为优良的公民,有助于社会的安定,将来成为国家栋梁之材。
Therefore, parents should act and speak with great care and not be too casual. If parents don't reflect upon their own conduct, they may become bad influences on their children. If children aren't raised well, they become social failures and burdens to the country. Parents are responsible for teaching their children. They should practice what they preach and be good models for their children. In everything they do, they should be upright, honest, devoted to helping others, and filled with compassion for all people. Under their influence, the children will naturally grow up to become good citizens and leaders who contribute to the peace and stability of society. They will become pillars of society.
现在社会上一般无知的人,所做的事情,实在令人怵目惊心;引诱意志不坚的青年人堕入火坑而不自知,还认为是逢场作戏。哪知道:
In today's society, the things that ordinary people do are truly alarming. Easily impressionable young people land in deep trouble before they realize it. They think they are only having fun, acting out a play. How could they know that
一失足成千古恨, 再回头已是百年身。
Once you stumble and fall, you will regret it for a thousand years. When you turn around again, a hundred years will already have passed.
这种风气,坏到极点,父母若这样下流,必会影响子女也下流。
This describes the worst kind of behavior. If the parents are depraved, the children will surely be depraved as well.
凡是住在万佛圣城的人,都不可以同流合污,要洁身自爱,学正人君子的作风,把社会风气改变过来,绝对要安分守己,不参加不正当的聚会,不欣赏不正当的娱乐,这样才能影响他人改邪归正。
People who live at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas should not go along with the defiled trends of the world. We should purify ourselves, cherish ourselves, and learn to be proper and righteous people, so that we can reform the social trends. We should do what is proper and never take part in improper gatherings or amusements. Only then can we influence others to reform and become proper as well.
学校是教育良才的圣地
School Is a Sacred Place for Nurturing People's Talents
老师有“得天下英才而教育之”的快乐。这是神圣不可侵犯的工作,所以要负起责任,认真教学。
Teachers experience the joy of teaching talented and promising students. Theirs is a sacred and inviolable duty, and they should take that duty seriously.
学校是教育良才的圣地,好像大冶洪炉锻炼钢铁一样,经过千锤百炼之后,成为金刚不坏身,将来就能服务于国家,成为栋梁之材。老师有“得天下英才而教育之”的快乐,这是神圣不可侵犯的工作,所以要负起责任,认真教学。
School is a sacred place where people's talents are nurtured. It is like a great furnace where steel is forged. After being smelted thousands of times, students become indestructible like vajra. In the future they will be able to serve the country well. Teachers, in turn, experience the joy of teaching talented and promising students. Theirs is a sacred and inviolable duty, and they should take that duty seriously.
现在所有的学校都变质了,无论大学、中学或者小学,学生差不多都有吸毒的记录,因为儿童都有好奇心,先学吸毒,然后学偷东西,偷来的东西换钱,再买毒品。学生都学会打妄语,都学会欺骗人。你们目睹这种情形,身为这个国家的公民,再不深自警惕,真是没有心肝了。你们到外边学校去看一看,谁敢说哪一个学校的学生不吸毒、不贩毒?甚至于老师都不闻不问,知而不管,任其发展;有些学校更变成贩毒吸毒的交易所,这是多么危险!最令人痛心的事,莫过于使学校成为男女谈情说爱的场所,变成性行为泛滥的地方。父母甚至鼓励女儿服避孕药丸,这真是古今奇闻,然而学校却不闻不问,只知道收学费。
Today's schools are of a different caliber than those of the past. Most college, high school, and even elementary students have experimented with drugs. They do so out of curiosity, and then they learn to steal things and sell them in order to buy more drugs. Right before our eyes, our children are learning how to lie and cheat. If we have any conscience at all, how can we, as citizens, not be alarmed? Take a look in the schools outside. Is there a single one whose students do not take or deal drugs? Yet teachers act as if they did not know what's going on. They don't inquire about it, because they simply don't care. They don't want to interfere with what's going on. Some schools are even turning into drug trafficking centers. How dangerous this is! It's really a shame when schools turn into places for boys and girls to be promiscuous and indulge in romance. Nowadays parents even encourage their daughters to take birth control pills. This was unheard of in the past. Yet schools pay no attention to this. All they care about is collecting the tuition.
这样教育出来的学生,没有道德的观念,也没有贞操的观念,一切只讲自由。自由!自由!自由到地狱去了。这种不良的风气,对于人道上真是有百害而无一利,如果教育当局再不设法纠正,后果是不言而知的。所以万佛圣城的学校,无论大学、中学、小学,都是男女分班上课,从儿童时期开始训练男女有别的教育。
Students educated in such schools have no ethical values and no concept of virtue and chastity; all they talk about is freedom. They holler, "Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!" all the way to the hells. This unwholesome trend is harmful to humanity in many ways. If the educational system doesn't rectify the situation, the future can easily be imagined. That's why the university, high schools, and elementary schools at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas are segregated by gender. From youth, students become accustomed to learning in an environment where boys and girls are taught separately.
在此再次提醒当局,要赶快设法改善学校这股歪风,所谓:
Once more, I urge the educational system to quickly reform the unhealthy trends in the schools. As it is said,
亡羊补牢,未为迟也。
Although you have lost one sheep, It's not too late to repair the pen.

学佛法要能勇于改过
In Studying the Buddhadharma, We Must Bravely Change Our Faults
知道以前所行所作有不对的地方,就是有智慧。
To be wise is to recognize one's past mistakes.
各位!修道若是不能改过,就等于没有修道;学佛法不能知过必改,等于没有学佛法。所谓:
If we cannot change our faults, we aren't really cultivating the Way. If we are aware of our faults but don't change them, we aren't really studying the Buddhadharma.
行年五十,而知四十九之非。
When one turns fifty, one is aware of the errors of the past forty-nine years.
知道以前所行所作有不对的地方,凡是有这种感觉的人,就是有智慧,将来的前途也是无量光明。若是不知以前之非,这个人就要糊涂一辈子,终日图虚名,被客尘所迷,这种人多么可怜!
To be wise is to recognize one's past mistakes, and to realize that the future holds limitless possibilities. People who do not recognize their errors will be muddled to the end of their lives. People who crave illusory fame and seek after external things are pitiful indeed!
我们不要把佛性寄托在四大假合的物质上,只知求享受,不知修真道。为什么弃真逐妄?为什么舍本求末?都是因为不知道反省,有了过错也不肯改。因为不认识自己的自性是清净无染,没有一切的尘垢,所以对自性没有丝毫的把握,于是同流合污,将自性染污了,把本有的智慧也埋没了,这样就更难明心见性了。
We shouldn't neglect our Buddha-nature and pay so much attention to material things. We shouldn't crave enjoyment and forget to cultivate. Why do we discard the true to chase after the false? Why do we ignore the root and seek out the branches? It's because we don't know how to examine ourselves, and because we don't want to change our faults. Unaware that our own natures are pure and pristine, we wallow in the mire, defiling our natures and burying our wisdom. Then it becomes even harder for us to understand our minds and see our natures.
我们住在万佛圣城,要把心中的黑暗除掉,令自性的光明现出来,用正大光明来处理事情,不用手段来压迫人。我们要谨记
At the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, we should expel the darkness from our minds so our own natures can shine forth. We should do things with a proper, bright, and all-encompassing mind. We should never manipulate or oppress other people. We should always remember:
是道则进,非道则退; 择善而从,不善而改。
Go forward along the Way; Retreat from what is not the Way. Follow what is good; Change what is evil.
能这样,一定能达到贤圣的地位。
If this is how we are, we will surely become sages and worthy ones.
