Lost Village
by Peng Yunxia
A barren field, more deserted than a human heart, the last scarecrow
has changed its outlook with the wind. The river carries a clear sky with it,
but shows its teeth of realism downstream, and lays out a bridge
at its lower reach, for the convenience of tigers and flies.
Sprouting wheat and wildflowers are left alone at the end of the century.
Father's barn is now packed with sunset, insects, and the calls of wild partridges.
Fallen leaves churn in the old brick house, the fire in the wood stove is out.
Before spring could return, grandma became the banyan tree by the village entrance,
guarding the decaying shrine, and giving folks a sense of home.
God is a bunch of children, running away from the concrete forest,
sometimes they appear as a few sunflowers, or a flock of doves.
